La Décade philosophique comme système 1794-1807
At the turn of the 18th century, political economy, the new pilot science, and behavior came together in the name of public utility, while the theoretical foundations were laid for a society based on competition in which, according to l’Idéologie, free and reasonable citizens of the constitutional state, imbued with public spirit and attached to republican values, would become hard-working, prosperous and virtuous.
The journal La Décade philosophique, littéraire et politique (1794-1807), most of whose editors and contributors were won over to l’Idéologie or its perspectives, was one of the main focal points for the dissemination of the movement's ideas and action. More than any other scholarly journal of the time, it helped to establish for the first time the “intellectual power” of the press alongside the other traditional powers.
La Décade philosophique comme système 1794-1807 en 9 volumes (Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2004) directed by Josiane Boulad-Ayoub, with the collaboration of Martin Nadeau, is an anthologie raisonnée which brings together the articles from La Décade philosophique which, in our opinion, most significantly reveal the problems posed by the Idéologues’ political, economic and philosophical thinking. La Décade is indeed the key journal of the period from 9 Thermidor to the beginning of the Empire, a period rich in decisive historical events, but as yet under-examined.
