Théâtre classique at ARTFL

This collection is comprised of 874 French plays and other theatrical texts, containing more than 10.6 million words and over 86,000 individual word forms, from the period between 1500 and 1797. Molière, Corneille, Marivaux, and Voltaire are all represented here, as are lesser-known playwrights such as Gilles de Caux de Montlebert, Joseph-François Duché de Vancy, and Antoine Le Métel d’Ouville.

The texts come to us from 2 different sources:

  • 815 plays from the excellent French Théâtre classique project, directed by Paul Fièvre.
  • Molière and Boissy's plays from Frédéric Glorieux's excellent work on the Dramacode project.

The high quality of these digital editions allows for full-text searching in PhiloLogic that can be filtered by dates, section headings, and even individual speakers. One may, for example, search Molière's Le Misanthrope for every instance of Alceste's use of the word homme.

SEARCH the Théâtre classique.
