Here follows an index of the listings of prints and photographs in the following historical sources: (a) the weekly issues of the journal, Bibliographie de la France, 1811-1880 (app. 110,000 listings), (b) its predecessor, Journal général de l'imprimerie, 1810-1811 (app. 200 listings), (c) the manuscript registers of the legal deposit of prints between 1795-1811 (app. 2000 listings), and (d) the registers of prints and photographs which were refused authorization for publication, according to surviving records at the Archives nationales de France (app. 780 listings, added in 2010).

Indexing is by keyword. Because the listings have been copied without editorial revision, spellings are in the usage of the period, and proper names contain the wide variety of spellings and forms which occurs when information is passed orally and by handwritten copy. To anticipate variations having many different causes, therefore, it is recommended that queries be devised with a minimal number of characters; alternative queries, use of the wild card character * and the boolean operator OR are also recommended. The research of personal names of printmakers, photographers and their collaborators may require more than expected patience to identify homonymous variants and misspellings caused by handwriting – e.g. the name of the artist "Jazet" sometimes appears as "Jazel" and sometimes as "Chazet." For assistance, all variants of the names of printmakers, photographers and their collaborators are displayed for examination in the note on Similarity Searching (below). The accuracy of the transcription of listings from the Bibliographie de la France is good, including even printers' errors, and may be verified from the pages themselves available online in the project Gallica.
